Lyle Lovett says “it ought to be easier,” he’s right, of course. That’s how it goes sometimes, easy tasks end up complicated and things you dread turn out all right. The thing is things are rarely as you expect them to be, so there’s no point in worrying about them. Trust me on this and please join me now as we stand and make the Bluebird.

It’s a beautiful drink, for all its blueness. And perhaps it’s worth making just for the pure joy of viewing it. Let’s just get it made and philosophize after the break.
Grab your tins and pop in 2 ounces of gin, I went with my beloved Corsair; 1 ounce of blue curaçao, 1/4 ounce of orgeat, 3/4 of an ounce of fresh squeezed lemon juice and 2-3 drops of 18-21 Earl Grey bitters. Add some ice and shake to the beat of the Garth Brooks version of “Mr Blue“, the second best song with those words in the title. Double strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a ridiculously long lemon peel.

It’s a good drink. Not terribly complex, but good. Maybe it’s just the color, but I’ve not been impressed by anything with blue curaçao in it yet. It seems like maybe the blue is a crutch. Perhaps if a drink is good, but not quite good enough to make the menu, they bring in the blue, in an attempt to fool the cocktail gods. I could be wrong, you may be right, I could be crazy. I’ve got some more blue stuff waiting in the wings, hopefully I’ll discover that amazing looking drink that also blows us away in the taste department.

Guess I should’ve listened to my own advice. I expected this one to be interesting, orgeat often is, but it’s more blue than anything else. Nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t ring my bell today. That Mr. Blue, that’s a good song though, you can try the Fleetwoods original version if you’d like. Speaking of Fleetwoods, my Grandpa had a blue Cadillac, but it was not a Fleetwood, it was a Coupe DeVille. My other grandparents, they had a Fleetwood, but it wasn’t blue. See, things work out, just not as you expected. I reckon that’s enough stream of consciousness from an exhausted monkey with delusions of grandeur. Y’all stay safe, stay hydrated and stay sane, my friends.
